Welcome to this year’s Torbay Festival of Poetry and the new Festival website where you can order tickets, enter the competition and find out more about the skillful entertaining poets waiting to entertain you.
Our popular Thursday evening party-style opening event will be returning to the atmospheric Torre Abbey where ‘5 Amp Fuse’ will be performing. 5 Amp = Five All Male Poets who have put together an exciting and energetic programme of poetry for your evening enjoyment.
This year is the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and the Festival will, of course, make a reference to this event. Great Britain isn’t the only country that has a national poet of whom we are justly proud. So this year the Festival is taking you on a journey ‘Round the world in 80 minutes’ and introducing you to some of the great poetry from other countries. We also have poets from other countries reading. A truly international line-up for you. So with poets being put ‘On the Spot’ and the popular Open Mic lunchtime sessions giving everyone a chance to strut their stuff, there is much variety in this year’s programme. The subject for the Festival Challenge will be announced at the Thursday evening event.
With twenty five events, poetry will fill the weekend. As well as listening to readings from home and away, learn more about writing poetry at workshops, listen to poets talking about their craft, meet the poets and, above all, ask questions of them. Visitors to the Festival enjoy the convivial atmosphere of the Livermead Cliff Hotel, which is situated on the water’s edge. This is a long weekend which celebrates all things poetic in the heart of beautiful Torbay: sea, palm trees, light … and inspiration!
For ease of administration, single appropriate prices will be charged for each event. Tea/Coffee and the famous shortbreads are included in the price. The Festival’s aim of concentrating a packed schedule of events, mainly into one comfortable venue, has established an inspiring literary weekend by the sea with the added advantage of the beautiful English Riviera as a backdrop. Torbay is famous for sunshine … it also has a reputation for poetry.
With the exception of Thursday, all other events will take place in the Livermead Cliff Hotel, Sea Front, Torquay, TQ2 6RO. Free car parking is available at the hotel and comprehensive disabled access.
